Light + Building 2026: Why It Matters (And Why We Were There)
There are industry events… and then there’s Light + Building.
Every two years, the global smart building and lighting industry comes together in Frankfurt. On paper, it’s impressive, with over 140,000 visitors from 143 countries this year. But for us, the numbers aren’t the point.
We go for a reason: to stay close to the technology shaping our industry, to challenge our thinking, and to connect with the people driving what comes next.
This year, our Co-Founder and Director, Ben, was there representing Intecho, meeting with manufacturers, partners and peers, and getting a clear, first-hand view of where smart buildings are heading.

Open, Connected, and Built to Last
If there was one theme running through everything, it’s this… smart buildings are no longer about individual systems, they’re about how everything works together.
KNX continues to lead that conversation, not because it’s new, but because it’s proven. What stood out this year wasn’t reinvention, but refinement: a more connected ecosystem, better tools for those delivering projects on the ground, a stronger focus on security, and a clear evolution into IoT and AI-enabled environments.
It reinforced something we’ve always believed at Intecho – that the foundation matters! Get that right, and everything else works harder.
Lighting Has Moved On
Lighting is no longer just about illumination. That shift is happening fast, and it was impossible to ignore at this year’s show.
DALI and connected lighting systems are now part of a much bigger conversation: how lighting supports wellbeing, adapts in real time, and integrates seamlessly into wider building systems. From dynamic environments to AI-assisted design tools, lighting has become a core part of the smart building ecosystem – not just an add-on.
Buildings That Think, Respond and Adapt
The biggest shift isn’t just in technology. It’s in mindset. Buildings are no longer passive spaces, they’re active systems. They manage energy, respond to demand, integrate renewables and adapt in real time. What we’re seeing now is a move towards buildings that don’t just exist, but actively contribute to how they’re used and how they perform.
Across the event, three themes kept coming up again and again…
- Sustainable transformation – not just new builds, but improving what already exists.
- Smart connectivity – with open systems like KNX and DALI making true interoperability the standard.
- Human-centric design – spaces built around people, not just performance metrics.
And that last point matters most. Because smart buildings shouldn’t just perform better. They should feel better to be in.

What This Means for Our Clients
Events like Light + Building aren’t about chasing trends. They’re about sense-checking the direction of the industry and making sure what we’re delivering is grounded in what actually works. And right now, the direction is clear – open systems over closed platforms, integration over fragmentation, and longevity over short-term fixes.
The technology is already there. Proven, scalable, and ready. The real difference comes in how it’s applied.
At Intecho, we’ve never been about flashy tech for the sake of it. We focus on outcomes, creating buildings that are easier to run, more efficient to operate, and better for the people using them every day.
Light + Building 2026 didn’t change our direction; it simply reinforced it.
